2017 NFL Mock Draft – DraftGeek’s

DraftGeek’s 2017 NFL Mock Draft – First Round

Updated April 27

“DraftGeek” (not be confused with nfldraftgeek.com that does a great job!) is the Data Mining (that is pretty much what non-sports people call Analytics) nerd that has been an NFL draft junkie since doing an undergrad paper on it for a Prob and Stats course. A medical industry executive, she (yes, she) secretly would like to give it all up and be Cynthia Frelund.

Round One (1-20) | Round One (21-32)

Round 1 (Picks 1-20):

NFL Mock Draft - Cleveland Browns

1. Cleveland Browns

2016 First Round Pick: Corey Coleman, Baylor (15)

Myles Garrett, Outside Linebacker (DE), Texas A&M

I’m going to stand by this pick, even now that Garoppolo is off the table. The Browns don’t necessarily need an elite QB; they have enough weapons for a serviceable QB. And while the QB talent pool isn’t deep this year, I don’t see them using their top pick that way.

NFL Mock Draft - San Francisco 49ers

2. San Francisco 49ers

2016 First Round Picks: DeForest Buckner, Oregon (7) Joshua Garnett, Stanford (28)

Deshaun Watson, Quarterback, Clemson

I watched him play, and come up big, playing his best when pressure was on. Some argue that the 49ers have too many holes to fill to allow Watson to succeed. I disagree. This is a guy who elevates talent around him. I may be the only person left on the planet who doesn’t think they are taking a DE, or at least a defensive player, first overall, but I’m sticking to my guns.

NFL Mock Draft - Chicago Bears

3. Chicago Bears

2016 First Round Pick: Leonard Floyd, Georgia (9)

Solomon Thomas, Defensive End, Stanford

The Bears really need a TE and a CB, but this draft is loaded with both. Best available it is, and this defensive surely could use the help.

NFL Mock Draft - Jackson Jaguars

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

2016 First Round Pick: Jalen Ramsey, Florida State (5)

 Leonard Fournette, Running Back, LSU

I previously had the Jags taking Mike Williams in this spot, but after his less-than-stellar pro day, I don’t see him as top-5 or even top-10 talent. An elite edge-rusher might end up being the pick, as both Thomas and Allen could be available here, but the Jags need to alleviate the pressure on the Quarterback. And defense doesn’t actually win championships… you still need points on the board. Update 4-18: Pretty sure I had this pick here long before it got “popular.”

NFL Mock Draft - Tennessee Titans

5. Tennessee Titans (from Rams)

2016 First Round Pick: Jack Conklin, Michigan State (8)

Marshon Lattimore, Cornerback, Ohio State

CB is definitely a position of need, and Lattimore is an elite talent.

NFL Mock Draft - New York Jets

6. New York Jets

2016 First Round Pick: Darron Lee, Ohio State (20)

Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina

Every year the draft experts have the same stance… teams shouldn’t reach for a QB. And every year a desperate team does it anyway. I’m writing my mock draft not based on what I think they SHOULD do, but what I think it’s possible they WILL do. And this is possible. Update 4-18: More people coming around to a QB pick here, calling for Watson, but Watson is already with the 49ers!

NFL Mock Draft - San Diego Chargers

7. Los Angeles Chargers

2016 First Round Pick: Joey Bosa, Ohio State (3)

 Jamal Adams, Strong Safety, LSU

His leadership qualities are as important as his talent to this team. A Safety is surely what this team needs most, and he also happens to be the “best talent” available in this mock at this spot.

NFL Mock Draft - Carolina Panthers

8. Carolina Panthers

2016 First Round Pick: Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech (30)

 Christian McCaffrey, Running Back, Stanford

I can practically hear Cam Newton screaming “thank you!” Time to reignite this offense.

NFL Mock Draft - Cincinnati Bengals

9. Cincinnati Bengals

2016 First Round Pick: William Jackson III, Houston (24)

Jonathan Allen, Defensive End, Alabama

If he is still here at pick 9, this has to be the guy.

NFL Mock Draft Buffalo Bills

10. Buffalo Bills

2016 First Round Pick: Shaq Lawson, Clemson (19)

Mike Williams, Wide Receiver, Clemson

Only, only because Corey Davis’s ankle injury is not recovered enough to take him top 10.

NFL Mock Draft - New Orleans Saints

11. New Orleans Saints

2016 First Round Pick: Sheldon Rankins, Louisville (12)

Malik Hooker, Free Safety, Ohio State

They have yet to address this need in free agency, so assuming he is still here, they take him.

NFL Mock Draft - Cleveland Browns

12. Cleveland Browns (from Eagles)

2016 First Round Pick: Corey Coleman, Baylor (15)

O.J. Howard, Tight End, Alabama

If they are going to make do with the QBs they have, or one they get later, a big, strong TE who can catch the ball too is not a bad idea.

NFL Mock Draft - Arizona Cardinals

13. Arizona Cardinals

2016 First Round Pick: Robert Nkemdiche, Mississippi (29)

Patrick Mahomes II, Quarterback, Texas Tech

NFL Mock Draft - Philadelphia Eagles

14. Philadelphia Eagles (from Vikings)

2016 First Round Pick: Carson Wentz, North Dakota State (2)

Dalvin Cook, Running Back, Florida State

NFL Mock Draft - Indianapolis Colts

15. Indianapolis Colts

2016 First Round Pick: Ryan Kelly, Alabama (18)

Derek Barnett, Defensive End, Tennessee

NFL Mock Draft - Baltimore Ravens

16. Baltimore Ravens

2016 First Round Pick: Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame (6)

Garett Bolles, Offensive Tackle, Utah

NFL Mock Draft - Washington Redskins

17. Washington Redskins

2016 First Round Pick: Josh Doctson, TCU (22)

Haason Reddick, Outside Linebacker, Temple

NFL Mock Draft - Tennessee Titans18. Tennessee Titans

2016 First Round Pick: Jack Conklin, Michigan State (8)

John Ross, Wide Receiver, Washington

NFL Mock Draft - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2016 First Round Pick: Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida (11)

Forrest Lamp, Offensive Guard, Western Kentucky

NFL Mock Draft - Denver Broncos

20. Denver Broncos

2016 First Round Pick: Paxton Lynch, Memphis (26)

Cam Robinson, Offensive Tackle, Alabama
