Van Smith is a smaller safety, that has primarily been used in various coverages rather than with run support or blitzing. As a free safety, he can roam deep zones, and is able to locate balls quickly and get to receivers to make plays. With his excellent instincts and agility, can play in short and medium zones as well, and is able to cover running backs and tight ends working in the slot. If teams are convinced he can contribute in the box more, his stock could improve.
