2020 NFL Mock Draft Round 1
1) Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevor Lawrence QB, Clemson 6’6″ 220 lbs
Thank God the Jags finally axed HC Doug Marrone to go with GM Dave Caldwell which they should have done ages ago. Lawrence is the total package. High end skill set to go with uncanny ability to perform at a high level. XLNT face of the franchise player. They need to use their early picks wisely & get some quality players to develop around him.
2) New York Jets – Penei Sewell OT, Oregon 6’6″ 325 lbs
I think this is the best prospect in this draft. They could move this years 1st rounder Mekhi Becton who is having an outstanding rookie year to ROT where he will have aircraft carrier presence with his size (6’7″ 350 lbs) & insert Sewell in at LOT & the Jets are set for the next 10 years. Sam Darnold’s new best friends. On the other hand if Ohio St. upsets Alabama in the national championship game & Justin Fields plays like he did vs Clemson in the national semi – final I think he’ll be the selection here.
3) Miami Dolphins (from hou) – DeVonta Smith WR/SWR, Alabama 6’1″ 175 lbs
The accolades & awards are just rolling in for Smith. AP player of the year & Heisman Trophy winner. This player has had a year similar to LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase ‘s in 2019. But he didn’t win the Heisman. Runs great routes & has sticky fingers with speed to burn. Re-uniting him with his former college QB Tua sounds like a pretty good idea to me.
4) Atlanta Falcons – Justin Fields QB, Ohio St. 6’3″ 223 lbs
The last time the Falcons were selecting this high they picked Matt Ryan out of Boston College in 2008. Fields stock had been sliding due to subpar performances. But in the national semi final he was just out of sight vs Clemson. The Falcons need to select Matt Ryan’s replacement. If he plays like he did vs Clemson against Alabama & they win he’ll move up to #2 overall.
5) Cincinnati Bengals – Ja’Marr Chase WR, LSU 6’1″ 200 lbs
Like the Dolphins the Bengals decide to reunite Chase with his college QB Joe Burrow who had a prolific season together in 2019 at LSU on their way to an unbeaten season & the National Championship. There’s a good chance the Bengals lose WR A.J. Green to FA.
6) Philadelphia Eagles – Micah Parsons ILB/OLB, Penn St. 6’3″ 245 lbs
The next great LB in the Nittany Lion tradition. Decided to opt out for the 2020 season. But in 2019 he had 109 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles & 5 passes defended. In 2018 started as a true freshman & produced 83 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks & 2 forced fumbles. Has a nose for the football & makes splash plays for his defense.
7) Detroit Lions – Zach Wilson QB, BYU 6’3″ 210 lbs
I think it’s possible the Lions trade long time QB Matt Stafford possibly to the Dallas Cowboys. He was born & raised in the area. Actually, his best friend growing up & through high school & also to this day is L.A Dodgers Clayton Kershaw. Wilson has had 2 prolific years in Provo & led the Cougars to national prominence in 2020. Here’s a QB who can be 3 td’s down at the start of the 4th quarter & win the game. Goes through his progressions quickly as he scans the field. Also possesses a good set of wheels & can beat you with his legs. It’s time for a QB change in the Motor City.
8) Carolina Panthers – Kyle Pitts TE, Florida 6’6″ 246 lbs
This is the best TE in the nation & #2 isn’t even close. Can really run the seam & is to fast for LB’s to cover & to big for DB’s to bring down. This guy is clutch city. Makes big plays when his team needs them. Former TE Greg Olsen went to Seattle this year & is sorely missed. Here’s a player that can make you forget him.
9) Denver Broncos – Alex Leatherwood OT/G, Alabama 6’6″ 322 lbs
Seems like the Broncos have been shuffling OL for 5 years. Here’s a plug n play starter on the blindside for the next decade. 3 year starter for the Tide. Very well coached by HC Nick Saban & his staff in Tuscaloosa.
10) Dallas Cowboys – Patrick Surtain II CB, Alabama 6’2″ 203 lbs
The Cowboys need a CB starter to play off this years pick Trevon Diggs who is also a former Tide player. He’s the top CB on my board. Has good speed & agility. Fluid hip movement which enables him to pick up ball before WR sees it. Rare freshman DB to see the field under HC Nick Saban. Has good bloodlines being the son of former Dolphin CB Patrick Surtain who played 11 years & was a 3 time pro bowler.
11) New York Giants – Gregory Rousseau EDGE, Miami 6’6″ 260 lbs
The G-men grab the best Edge Rusher in this draft. He opted out for the 2020 season. In 2019 he really burst onto the scene accumulating 54 tackles, 15.5 sacks & 2 forced fumbles. Possesses a big time skill set & is just oozing upside.
12) San Francisco 49’ers – Jaycee Horn CB, South Carolina 6’1″ 205 lbs
The Niners are aging in their secondary & need some new blood. They need to give this player to Richard Sherman & let him mold him into his replacement. Most improved CB in the country in 2020. Can play man cover or zone. Has enough speed to not allow separation. Also has good bloodlines being the son of Joe Horn former long time Saint WR & 2 time pro bowler.
13) Los Angeles Chargers – Kwity Paye EDGE, Michigan 6’4″ 277 lbs
The Bolts could go in several directions with this pick but decide to take a high energy Edge Rusher to pair with pro bowler Joey Bosa. This would give the Chargers the best EDGE duo in the AFC West if not the conference. He won’t be Patrick Mahomes new best friend that’s for sure. Another player who constantly keeps moving up draft boards.
14) Minnesota Vikings – Justin Ross WR, Clemson 6’4″ 210 lbs
Another player who decided to opt-out of the 2020 season. In 2019 he had 66 receptions for 865 yards & 8 touchdowns before getting injured & missing the rest of the year. In 2018 he produced 46 catches for 1000 yards & 9 touchdowns & averaged 21.7 yards per catch. I don’t see him in many mocks but if he gets a 1st round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee I think he’ll come out.
15) New England Patriots – Jaylen Waddle SWR/WR/PR, Alabama 5’10” 182 lbs
Very fast & dangerous receiver who can take it to the promised land on any touch. The Pats are in dire straits at WR & look for them to take another WR early & maybe a TE also. I don’t think HC Bill Belichick will take a QB here & I don’t think Cam Newton will be there next year. But look for him to go into the FA market or trade for another vet like Matt Ryan who went to Boston College & Belichick knows quite well. He’s getting up there in his years & may not want to go through the time to develop a young QB. Plus Ryan doesn’t have a big injury history.
16) Arizona Cardinals – Caleb Farley CB, Virginia Tech 6’2″ 207 lbs
The Cards need a CB to pair with Patrick Peterson or replace him. Big CB who is very athletic & has good speed to not allow separation. Plays WR’s tight vested. Likes to live in WR’s jersey.
17) Las Vegas Raiders – Christian Barmore DT, Alabama 6’5″ 310 lbs
The Raiders have been giving up lots of yardage up the gut in their defense. And also haven’t been getting enough pressure on opposing QB’s all year. Enter Barmore who is XLNT at getting after the QB from the interior. His knock is run defense but in 2020 he’s improved greatly at stuffing the rush.
18) Miami Dolphins – Najee Harris RB, Alabama 6’2″ 230 lbs
I think this is the best RB in the country. Has the size & leg strength to just rip through arm tackles & accelerate into the secondary where he’s a major problem for DB’s. I’ve had him slotted in the early 2nd round but after his last 2 performances vs Florida in the SEC Championship & vs Notre Dame in the national semi-finals this guy has to be in the 1st round. The Dolphins are selecting players that are familiar with young QB Tua. Look for HC Brian Flores to get a lot of Coach of the Year votes.
19) Washington Football Team – Trey Lance QB, North Dakota St. 6’3″ 226 lbs
Alex Smith has had a great year leading them to the playoffs & will undoubtedly be the NFL comeback player of the year. He’s good for a couple more years but HC Ron Rivera has to take a QB for the future. Only got to play in 1 game in 2020 before North Dakota St. canceled the rest of the slate for the year. But in 2019 he was the biggest 1 year wonder in the country. He hit on 67% of his passes for 2786 yards with 28 touchdowns & ZERO interceptions. Has all the physical tools to be a QB starter in the NFL.
20) Chicago Bears – Terrace Marshall WR, LSU 6’3″ 200 lbs
Da Bears could use 2 WR’s from this draft. Marshall went semi under the radar in 2019 with Ja’Marr Chase & Justin Jefferson getting all the press & playing time. Chase opted out for 2020 & Jefferson went to the Vikings in the 1st round. Thus Marshall has been the #1 target & getting the most opportunities & has been taking advantage of that. In 2020 he produced 48 receptions for 731 yards & 10 touchdowns in 7 games. Has long strong hands to just pluck the ball out of the air. Has enough see ya speed to not get caught from behind.
21) Jacksonville Jaguars (from lar) – Travis Etienne RB, Clemson 5’10” 200 lbs
A smart move by the Jags to reunite Etienne with Lawrence since they spent their entire careers together at Clemson. He’s the all time leading rusher & scorer in ACC history, Great RB who is outstanding on check down passes & picking up yards after catch.
22) Indianapolis Colts – Sam Cosmi OT, Texas 6’6″ 309 lbs
With OT Anthony Castanzo opting out of the season early & possibly testing the FA market this spring the Colts select his replacement. 3 year starter for the Longhorns. Needs to get into an NFL strength & conditioning program. Athletic OT who possesses good length & has a nice kick slide. Solid in pass protection & can open up running lanes for the ground game.
23) Cleveland Browns – Chris Olave WR, Ohio St. 6’1″ 185 lbs
With OBJ not playing & possibly not getting resigned plus Jarvis Landry has been on the rocks off & on with the Brown brass so they select a WR to fill the void. Has had a good year but the Big 10 had a late start. He runs solid routes has fluid moves & enough speed to leave DB’s in the dust. Really went wild in the national semi final vs Clemson when he had 6 receptions for about 150 yards & 3 touchdowns.
24) Tennessee Titans – Rondale Moore SWR/WR/PR, Purdue 5’9″ 180 lbs
The Titans need a smaller faster WR to go with A.J. Brown who is looking more & more like a long term pro bowler & Corey Davis who is having a solid year after having a couple that weren’t. Shifty & darty in the open field to go with his lightnin’ straight speed.
Good on special teams as punt returner.
25) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Kyle Trask QB, Florida 6’5″ 239 lbs
This player had a great season with 43 touchdown passes to go with only 5 interceptions. Stands tall in the pocket with a cannon attached to his right shoulder. Can float arching passes deep & on target or can chuck it like a rifle on a straight rope. Needs to work on his progressions & decision making. Has a good QB guru in HC Dan Mullen who has been grooming him for the next level. One of the final candidates for the Heisman Trophy.
26) Baltimore Ravens – Andre Cisco FS/SS, Syracuse 6′ 203 lbs
The Ravens have a hole on the back end of their defense. Was injured in game 2 this year & missed the rest of the season. But going back to 2018 this player has been the biggest ballhawk in the nation. He’s had 130 tackles, 13 interceptions & 5 forced fumbles. Physical S who isn’t afraid to come up into the tackle box & lay out some hard hits. Ravens kind of player.
27) New York Jets (from sea) – Rashad Bateman WR, Minnesota 6’2″ 210 lbs
The Big 10 got off to a slow start & he opted out of the back half of the season. This WR runs good routes, has strong hands & good speed. This guy was set for a big season but COVID wiped it out. The Jets took Denzel Mims last year & he’s worked out well. Sam Darnold or who is ever under center needs more weapons.
28) Pittsburgh Steelers – Shaun Wade CB/NCB, Ohio St. 6’1″ 194 lbs
Had a very good season in 2019 playing NCB. Took over Jeff Okudah’s spot this year & has been productive for a shortened season. Can play zone or man cover & is a good tackler in the open field. Seems like the Steelers are always looking for CB’s. Also, the Steelers have shown a strong preference for Buckeye players the last couple of decades.
29) New Orleans Saints – Mac Jones QB, Alabama 6’3″ 214 lbs
Sooner rather than later the Saints have to select Drew Brees replacement. Jones has had a fabulous season in 2020 for the Tide going unbeaten & playing for the National Championship on 1/11/21. He goes through his progressions nicely & makes good decisions. XLNT leader on the field & in the locker room. Smart player who I think could sit under Brees for a year or 2 & then be ready to take over. I think HC Sean Payton will keep Taysom Hill around but possibly could trade or release Jameis Winston.
30) Buffalo Bills – Creed Humphrey C/G, Oklahoma 6’5″ 316 lbs
The Bills are looking red hot & have a good chance to make the Super Bowl. They don’t need much but could use an anchor in the middle of their offensive line. 3 year starter in Norman. In 2019 he didn’t allow a sack in 799 snaps. Could also play G while waiting his chance at Center. Strong blocker for runs up the gut.
31) Green Bay Packers – Walker Little OT, Stanford 6’7″ 313 lbs
I’ve had a WR slotted her for quite a while but with the recent injury to LOT David Bakhtiari they need to address this quickly. Little opted out for 2020. But in 2019 & 2018 he was a bull in the rush game & solid in pass protection. With his frame he should fill out to about 330 lbs in a couple years. Plays with a nasty mean streak & likes to get physical with defensive lineman.
32) Kansas City Chiefs – Jaylen Mayfield OT, Michigan 6’5″ 320 lbs
HC Andy Reid likes to take players in the trenches early. Mayfield has been one of the few bright lights for the Wolverines in 2020. Opens up nice holes for the ground game & is rock solid in pass protection. Only a RSO & Wolverine OL have a habit of playing out their eligibility. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes back for 2021 & comes out in 2022 when he could be a top 10 pick & the 1st OT off the board.
