2019 NFL Mock Draft – Should Mock

2019 NFL Mock Draft – “Should Mock”

Last Updated:  March 15

Notes: Mock drafts are generally all predictive exercises, utilizing a slew of variables such as team needs, positional value, draft history, trends, etc. However, this “Should Mock” is entirely based on what we feel each team should do. We still utilize team needs, positional value, etc., but we throw out the team tendency, trends, predicting draft mistakes, and all the rest. We put ourselves as the GM of each team. It is indulgent and arrogant, but why not.

NFL Mock Draft - Arizona Cardinals

1. Arizona Cardinals

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OL, OG, WR, TE

Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma

Whatever you think of the coaching hire, the Cardinals are all in on this offense. What they “should” do has to follow this thinking. They have huge offensive line issues, but this system needs a QB with the exact skillset of Kyler Murray. They can actually get by with more zone type offensive linemen, and they can be found throughout the draft.

NFL Mock Draft - San Francisco 49ers

2. San Francisco 49ers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: CB, DE, DT, WR

Quinnen Williams, DT, Alabama

The 49ers trade for Dee Ford should have them taking a long look at Quinnen Williams. They have two quality defensive tackles but with the addition of Williams, and adding Ford on the edge, this allows them to rotate three exceptional interior tackles and have an elite edge rusher. Williams can be moved around if they want to get creative, and they could boast one of the best, and most versatile defensive lines in football.

NFL Mock Draft - New York Jets

3. New York Jets

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OT, WR, RB, TE, DE

Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio State

The Jets have added key pieces to their offense and defense, but still have a big need at defensive end. If Bosa is still on the board here, this is about as easy a choice as any team will have in the first round.

NFL Mock Draft - Oakland Raiders4. Oakland Raiders

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, OLB, WR, QB

Josh Allen, LB, Kentucky

The Raiders had to trade their best defensive player, and the best edge rusher in the NFL. Who knows what Josh Allen will end up being, but he appears to have a huge ceiling and if he works out, provides the type of edge rusher that they traded to Chicago.

NFL Mock Draft - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, CB, S, DE

Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida

Tampa Bay needs stability throughout their organization from the top down. They also need stability on the field. Jawaan Taylor looks like a safe, secure, dependable offensive tackle. The Bucs need a pick that works out and that brings stability.

NFL Mock Draft - New York Giants

6. New York Giants

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, OT, DT, DE, CB

Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State

Eli will be back next year, but also the Giants have stated they like the draft and sit approach to a QB. Their offense prizes a pocket passer, especially one that is accurate at short and mid-range passes. There isn’t much buzz about this matchup coming from the Giants, but it appears to be an excellent match, and the timing is right.

NFL Mock Draft - Jackson Jaguars

7. Jacksonville Jaguars

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, WR, OT, TE

Montez Sweat, LB/DE, Mississippi State

The Jaguars have their QB for the near future. He is hard working, stable, and reliable. Probably two years late, but what is done is done. They have undergone a purge of expensive and, in some cases, not great team guys, especially on defense. They have had a very expensive defense the last few years, and getting in some elite AND cheap starters is imperative.

NFL Mock Draft - Detroit Lions

8. Detroit Lions

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OLB, DE, CB, TE

Devin White, LB, LSU

The Lions defense was actually a top 10 defense last year. The problem is that there were some real stinker games during the season that people assumed was the norm. This team is built on linebackers, and want to become more of a 2 gapping team up front with linebackers controlling the rest of the play.

NFL Mock Draft Buffalo Bills

9. Buffalo Bills

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OT, OG, WR, CB

Andre Dillard, OT, Washington State

The Bills went out and got themselves a right tackle. Now they need a new left tackle. This is another very clear need and whomever they have marked as their top left tackle prospect they need to grab here and have their bookends set to protect their young star QB.

NFL Mock Draft - Denver Broncos

10. Denver Broncos

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DT, OT, CB, QB

Christian Wilkins, DE/DT, Clemson

The Broncos made a trade for Flacco, so for better or worse, they won’t be spending a top 10 pick on a QB. You would think. This could allow them to focus on their biggest issue… getting pressure up the middle. There are a number of options available, but Wilkins probably gives you the best combo of 1 and 2 gapping skills.

NFL Mock Draft - Cincinnati Bengals

11. Cincinnati Bengals

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OG/C, TE, OLB, ILB

Rashan Gary, DE/DT, Michigan

The Bengals need to fix their defense and quickly. They have some nice young players, but they need to sit back here and wait for the inevitable superstar to fall to them.

NFL Mock Draft - Green Bay Packers

12. Green Bay Packers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: S, DE, WR, OLB

D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

The Packers have a QB with substantial influence over all aspects of the team. It would be easy to say that them taking a WR here would be a demonstration of that, but in fact, they really need a WR that can open up the field for the rest of the offense.

NFL Mock Draft - Miami Dolphins

13. Miami Dolphins

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, DE, WR, RB

Ed Oliver, DT, Houston

Oliver had a tumultuous year and needs a fresh start that should begin at the NFL Combine. He played much lighter than his college weight was listed, and is much more of a penetrating 1 gapper, than a run stopping DT. The Dolphins will probably be drafting first a little over a year from now, and can start adding pieces all over the team now, instead of feeling a rush to succeed this year.

NFL Mock Draft - Atlanta Falcons14. Atlanta Falcons

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DT, DE, OG

Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

This is probably a make it or break it year for the GM and coach, and the Falcons could go after an offensive playmaker here. They did some work on the interior of their offensive line in free agency, but still have more work to be done. Williams might be a guard, but he is definitely an experienced, smart offensive lineman that they can use at multiple positions if needed.

NFL Mock Draft - Washington Redskins15. Washington Redskins

2019 NFL Draft Needs: CB, QB, S, WR, OT

Parris Campbell, WR, Ohio State

Take your favorite WR prospect and place him here. The Redskins are stuck in 3rd gear, and just need to get their offense rolling again. Can’t imagine that they would want to draft a QB and start over, as there are some proven veterans in free agency.

NFL Mock Draft - Carolina Panthers

16. Carolina Panthers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: S, OT, DE, OG, WR

Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson

The Panthers are losing a HOF edge rusher, and need to get more talent there, especially in the division they play in. Ferrell is probably the most well rounded DE in the draft.

NFL Mock Draft - New York Giants

17. New York Giants (from Cleveland)

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, OT, DT, DE, CB

Cody Ford, OG/OT, Oklahoma

What exactly is Ford, a right or left tackle? A guard? He seemed like he has the tools to play tackle, but whatever position he plays, he looks dominant. The Giants are building their team in a way that NFL “analysts” don’t find sexy and worth talking about, but what is the proven method for winning Superbowls.

NFL Mock Draft - Minnesota Vikings18. Minnesota Vikings

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DT, OLB, DE, OT

T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

This team is stacked on all levels, but needs more low risk, consistent results on offense. Nothing can get that going more than an excellent run and pass blocking TE that also is a threat in the passing game. If Hockenson fell here, it would be one of the perfect team and prospect matches.

NFL Mock Draft - Tennessee Titans19. Tennessee Titans

2019 NFL Draft Needs: WR, TE, ILB, OLB

Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

The Titans have added some nice pieces in free agency, and they got a WR they desperately needed. Their needs are shifting a bit, and they have an opportunity here to get an exceptional CB to add to their emerging defense.

NFL Mock Draft - Pittsburgh Steelers

20. Pittsburgh Steelers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: CB, ILB, OLB, S

Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma

Oh, no, another Brown! Marquise actually does have some onfield control issues, but they should not be worried about any repeats of their past experience with AB. They have two very good WR’s now, and this Brown could really help open up the defense.

NFL Mock Draft - Seattle Seahawks

21. Seattle Seahawks

2019 NFL Draft Needs: WR, CB, DT, DE, S

Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia

The Seahawks started their rebuild a few years ago, and are well on their way to going from just stable to a legit contender. They still need help with talent in the secondary, and should look at the best CB or S available when they pick at 21.

NFL Mock Draft - Baltimore Ravens

22. Baltimore Ravens

2019 NFL Draft Needs: WR, RB, DE

Garrett Bradbury, C/OG, NC STate

The Ravens GM should have one singular goal in the offseason- have the best O-line in 2019. If they are going all in on Lamar Jackson, they need to do everything in their power to buy him time in the pocket, and to create space in the run game. They don’t have a bad O-line, they just need to be elite.

NFL Mock Draft - Houston Texans

23. Houston Texans

2019 NFL Draft Needs: OT, OG, CB, S

Dalton Risner, OG/OT, Kansas State

Essentially, the Texans are in the same boat as the Ravens. They need to do everything in their power to improve their offensive line. Houston has not invested enough resources there, and this has to be their primary focus this offseason. Risner is a nasty player and is the type of mauler that the Texans need in front of their young star QB.

NFL Mock Draft - Oakland Raiders

24. Oakland Raiders (from Chicago)

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, OLB, WR, QB

N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State

The Raiders added an elite WR and another one that will be an excellent compliment. Gruden is extremely WR greedy, and they could have a chance to get a big, athletic WR prospect here that would give them the best top 3 WR’s in the NFL.

NFL Mock Draft - Philadelphia Eagles

25. Philadelphia Eagles

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, OT, CB, RB

Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech

The Eagles success started when they started to get constant pressure off the edge early in the season of their Superbowl run. That is what drives the defense, and still is the focus of the team. Ideally, they want to rotate 4 defensive ends all day to make the opposing QB’s day full of stress and pain.

NFL Mock Draft - Indianapolis Colts

26. Indianapolis Colts

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, DT, WR, CB

Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple

The Colts added a CB in free agency, but really had some work to do here. They are building slowly and surely, and every team desires to have 3 very dependable corners. Getting Ya-Sin could quickly turn their secondary into a strength of the team.

NFL Mock Draft - Oakland Raiders

27. Oakland Raiders (from Dallas)

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, OLB, WR, QB

Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State

The Raiders added Joyner in free agency, but they have more work to do there. Most teams are using 3 safeties more and more, and with Joyner in place, adding Abram would allow him develop without the pressure of being the man at the position for years. Really, the Raiders have needs everywhere, so in all honesty, this is a pick of wait and see how the draft falls.

NFL Mock Draft - San Diego Chargers

28. Los Angeles Chargers

2019 NFL Draft Needs: QB, OT, S, DT

Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

On paper, the Chargers are balanced and without a glaring flaw. They have two good lines, and a QB that keeps producing year in and year out. They are in the same division as the Chiefs, however, and need to upgrade their talent in the secondary.

NFL Mock Draft - Kansas City Chiefs29. Kansas City Chiefs

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DT, DE, OLB, S

Mack Wilson, ILB, Alabama

The Chiefs are changing their defense and it could be a huge undertaking. All that is known is the coaching scheme and style from the fired one to the new one, and there is a chasm between the two. The new defense needs a middle linebacker that can set the defense and do a little of everything.

NFL Mock Draft - Green Bay Packers30. Green Bay Packers (from New Orleans)

2019 NFL Draft Needs: S, DE, WR, OLB

Josh Jacobs, RB, Alabama

There isn’t too much separating a few running backs at the top of the list this year, but the Packers just really need to settle that position with at least one “plus” player. Jacobs didn’t get over-used in college, and has all of the tools to be feature back at the next level.

NFL Mock Draft - Los Angeles Rams31. Los Angeles Rams

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DT, OLB, TE, S

Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson

The Rams are inching toward a championship, and learning lessons along the way. One important, hard learned lesson is that they need to be able to bog down the middle when they need to.

NFL Mock Draft - New England Patriots

32. New England Patriots

2019 NFL Draft Needs: DE, DT, OLB, ILB, TE

Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

The Patriots prize the tight end position as part of a dynamic offense. Gronk will be retiring at some point soon, and they need an elite prospect to replace him.
